Stories Our Vietnamese Parents Never Tell
Have you ever wished you could ask your parents the questions you were too scared (or too young) to ask?
Like learn about your parents’ childhood, their experiences, life as a young adult?
How they got to the US, and what their experiences were truly like?
I've always wondered and have asked many times about things I was interested in. But, of course, I never got the full answers.
There were always big gaps to their stories and questions I didn't know how to ask, and literally could not ask because of language barriers.
What Author Jamie Jo Hoang shared in a recent podcast episode on the Infatuasian Podcast about honoring their stories, and needs as well as her own experiences was so eye-opening.
It helped me be at ease with what I don't know.
Also, reading her two books My Father The Panda Killer and her newest book (which we talk about on the episode) My Mother the Mermaid Chaser helped me imagine some of those gaps, those stories to help me empathize even more with my parents.
To help me imagine them young, scared, childlike resilient, brave and just trying to figure things out like I have and currently doing (and like they are still trying to do). I highly recommend reading the books.
I loved being a part of this conversation with Jaime and Curtis and hope you take a listen. There are gold nuggets all along the way.
I really appreciated the opportunity Curtis Chinn, host of the Infatuasian Podcast, presented me with to co-host this episode with Jaime. (Thanks Curtis!)
